Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is a short duration crop, grown throughout the year and belongs to the family Pedaliaceae.

Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops grown in India, domesticated well over 3000 years ago. Sesame has one of the highest oil contents when compared to any other oilseed and due to its rich, nutty flavor, it is a common ingredient in different cuisines across the world.

In terms of production, Sesame is cultivated in India since ancient times. It is one of the earliest domesticated plants. India is ranked 3rd in production of sesame seeds across the world in 2017.

Through the ages, the seeds have been a source of food and oil. Sesame seed oil is still the main source of fat used in cooking in the Near East and Far East countries. The oil also has many medicinal values and considered good for treatment of respiratory disorders, eye-infections and digestive ailments.
